Recently, Indore’s famous ‘Jeerawan’, which contains red chillies and several other ingredients has been prohibited in hand baggage as per the safety norms laid down by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BSCA). Such carry-on hand luggage restrictions can seem confusing, that is why we have created a hand luggage restrictions checklist that will tell you what items are not allowed on a plane and will help make packing for your next flight a breeze.

Items you can bring in your Carry-On Luggage

  • Small Tools – Certain small tools, such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers, are permitted, if they are 7 inches or less in length.
  • Non-flammable Liquids, Gels, and Aerosols—including food, drinks, and toiletries—in quantities of 3.4 ounces or less
  • Batteries – You can pack dry batteries (AA, AAA, C, and D) in either carry-on or checked bags.
  • Knitting Needles – Materials for knitting and needlepoint are allowed in carry-on bags and checked luggage.
  • Electronics – Small electronic items that are smaller than a standard-size laptop, such as cell phones and tablet devices, do not have to be removed from baggage during screening.
  • Medications – Medical necessities must be declared to screeners before going through security and are subject to additional screening.
  • Baby Food – Baby formula, juice, gel or liquid-filled teethers, breast milk, and canned, jarred, or processed baby food are allowed.
  • Disposable and Electric Razors – Both disposable and electric razors are permitted in either carry-on or checked luggage.
  • Small Pets – They are allowed to travel with travellers through security checkpoints, but it’s your duty to contact the airline for their specific policy.

Prohibited Hand Baggage Items

  • Sharp Objects – Box cutters, ice axes and picks, knives, meat cleavers, razor-type blades, and scissors that exceed 4 inches are not allowed.
  • Sporting Goods and Athletic Equipment – Baseball bats, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks, martial arts weapons, golf clubs, ski poles, hiking poles, and tent spikes/poles, are prohibited from carry-on luggage.
  • Self-Defense items – Self-defense sprays and other items, such as blackjacks, brass knuckles, billy clubs, and other martial arts weapons, are not permitted.
  • Large Quantities of Alcohol – Any drink with over 70 percent alcohol content cannot be checked or taken onto the plane.
  • Guns and Ammunitions – Well-packaged ammunition and unloaded firearms, BB guns, compressed-air guns, pellet guns, starter pistols, and replicas can be put in your checked luggage but must be acknowledged at check-in. These are a few items not allowed to pack in your carry-on bag.

Things you’re not allowed to carry on a plane, so leave them at home.

  • Alcoholic beverages over 70% alcohol – Any beverage with over 70 percent alcohol content, cannot be checked or taken onto the plane in your carry-on bag.
  • Flammable items – Aerosol cans, butane, fuels, gasoline, gas torches, lighter fluid, flammable paints, turpentine, paint thinner, and dangerous goods cannot be transported in any way on passenger airlines.
  • Explosive materials – Passengers cannot bring items such as hand grenades, blasting caps, fireworks, flares, dynamite, and replicas of explosive materials onboard aircraft.
  • Chemicals – Chlorine, spray paint, fertilizers, tear gas, bleach, spillable batteries, and fire extinguishers are considered dangerous and are not permitted on commercial passenger aircraft.
  • Outdoor and wildlife safety products – Items such as bear bangers and bear spray are not allowed on commercial aircraft.
  • Poisonous and infectious substances – Such as acids, alkalis, mercury, wet cell batteries and oven or drain cleaners.

As you can see, there are several items that are considered as hand luggage restrictions and as banned items in flight, and there are clear reasons for each one. It can be inconvenient to leave some of these baggage restrictions at home to keep passengers safe and prevent accidents, damages, and crimes on board.
