The student visa application is comparatively complicated unlike a tourist visa application. The Turkey student visa is also known as Education Visa. International students will need Turkey student visa or Education Visa to study in Turkey. This visa category is specifically for international students who are enrolled in a Turkish University.

Duration of the Turkey student visa

The student visa duration depends on the program you choose. The Turkey student visa is valid for up to 3 months or more. The Turkey Student Visa allows you to stay during your entire degree programme, you may need to renew your visa every year. If you want to stay in Turkey after your degree is over, you will have to apply for a different visa or a visa renewal through the immigration office.

Documents required for the Turkey visa application

  • Letter of admission or acceptance from a Turkish University or school or language course certified by the Ministry of Education.
  • Completed visa application form
  • Your International passport (must be at least 6 months valid after the date of application).
  • A 50x60mm passport photo on white background attached to the application form but not stapled.
  • Flight booking with confirmed dates.
  • Evidence of payment for visa application fee.
  • Proof of accommodation in Turkey – hotel booking or any other accommodation.
  • Six-month bank statements of the applicant or applicant’s sponsor.
  • Letter from sponsor bearing his/her financial means and stating that s/he will be responsible for applicant’s expenses (if being sponsored).

Processing time

Waiting times for appointments and for processing applications will vary depending on your nationality and the time of year. Most noteworthy, you should apply at least 3 months before your university degree program starts. Finally, After you’ve applied, you can expect that you’ll wait about 2 to 4 weeks for the decision.

Turkish Universities

As is common throughout Europe, Turkish higher education providers may be either public or private institutions.

Public universities

Public universities are founded and administered by the Turkish state. These institutions account for the majority of enrolments (around 75% of the total) and will generally provide the widest range of Masters programmes in different fields.

Private universities are established and administered as independent institutions, on a non-profit basis. While they are sometimes referred to as ‘foundation universities’; having been established by groups seeking to conduct research or training in specific areas or through specific external partnerships. Some also operate in association with overseas universities or employ international experts.

As a prospective Masters student in Turkey you can study at either a public or private university; depending on the opportunities available in your subject area. Private universities will usually charge higher fees, but this cost may be offset by unique partnerships and opportunities that are unavailable at public institutions.

Renewal of Student visa

You can renew your Student Visa as many times as you want, as long as you are enrolled in a Turkish University. However, you will need to show evidence of your eligibility and must apply from inside the Turkish territory before your visa expires. Also, If you want to stay back at the end of your study, you will need to apply for another type of visa.

After arrival in Turkey (obtaining a residence permit)

After obtaining a student visa, students must enter the country through a recognized border crossing. Furthermore, Within 30 days of arriving in Turkey on a student visa, students must then apply to the local Foreign National Division of the Directorate of Police with the following documents to apply for a residence permit.

a) Letter of acceptance from the institute of higher education to which the student has applied, or an equivalent document.

b) Valid, long-term passport.

c) Student visa issued by the embassy or consulate in the student’s home country.

d) Documentation of sufficient financial support for the period of studies in Turkey (bank statement, documentation of scholarship, etc.).

e) Payment for residence permit fee, the amount of which is stipulated each year in the Official Gazette.

f) The Directorate of Police may also require additional documentation.

After obtaining a residence permit (notification of changes in status)

a) Students who have been issued a student residence permit must then obtain a  Foreign National Identity Number, which can be acquired from the website of the General Registry Directorate: https:/tckimlik.nvi.gov.tr/AnonimSorgu.html

b) Foreign students who wish to renew their residence permits must do so before the  date of expiration indicated in the residence permit, or within 15 days following the date of expiration, by applying to the Foreign National Division of the Directorate of Police.

c) Students must notify the Foreign National Division of the Directorate of Police within 15 days in the case of any of the following: completion of studies, expulsion from the institution of higher education, termination of studies, or discontinuation of studies due to absenteeism. Students are also required to notify the Foreign National Division of the Directorate of Police within 48 hours of a change in residence address.

d) If a student’s residence permit is lost or damaged, the student must apply immediately to the Foreign National Division of the Directorate of Police for a replacement.
