Dubai received the heaviest rainfall in 75 years!
Dubai, often associated with its arid desert landscape, towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, recently faced an unexpected challenge – floods, a rare sight in this desert country. The UAE witnessed its heaviest downpour since records began in 1949, as shared by Dubai’s media office. The unexpected flooding, caused by an extensive cloud seeding operation spanning seven consecutive days, resulted in the city receiving an entire year’s worth of rainfall within a mere 24-hour period.

The repercussions were immediate and profound. The usually bustling streets were inundated with water, bringing transportation to a standstill as planes were unable to land or take off from the flooded airport runway. The Dubai Airport, one of the world’s busiest airport also halted operations for 25 minutes on April 17 and cancelled more than 50 Dubai flights due to heavy Dubai floods.
People found themselves stranded in their cars, navigating through the rising waters with uncertainty.

The floodwaters wreaked havoc across the city, with reports of chairs and tables being swept away from top-floor balconies and even the famous Mall of the Emirates succumbing to the gushing water. However, amidst the chaos, some residents embraced the unexpected turn of events with a sense of adventure, by indulging in exhilarating activities like wild spins in flooded yards or jet skiing through the waterlogged streets.
Amidst flood concerns, the UAE government schools will remain closed until April 19, ensuring the safety and security of students and staff.
Despite the challenges posed by the floods, Dubai’s resilience shone through. The city swiftly mobilized resources to assist affected residents, and emergency services worked tirelessly to restore normalcy. As the floodwaters recede and Dubai begins the process of recovery, the city’s unwavering spirit of determination and resilience remains undimmed. United in their efforts, Dubai stands poised to emerge stronger and more resilient, committed to building a safer and more prepared future for all.
What is Cloud Seeding?
Cloud seeding is a technique used to try to increase rainfall by dispersing certain substances, like silver iodide, into clouds. Cloud seeding in Dubai is often employed as a method to enhance rainfall in the region, which is characterized by arid desert conditions and limited natural water sources. The aim is to enhance precipitation and replenish water resources to support various sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, and urban development.
