International travel to most countries is permitted. However, it is necessary to comply with requirements to ensure entry into the country is allowed. Additive procedures have been placed by countries worldwide to safeguard the health of their residents and tourists.

This article looks at top tourist countries’ entry restrictions, explaining:

  • Guidelines to enter the country under the current rules.
  • Entry restrictions for Indian tourists during COVID-19.

To be granted entry into the below top tourist countries, Indians are required to comply with the following special pandemic rules.

Dubai – Dubai is open for travel. Indians who meet Dubai’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Fully vaccinated travellers must present their Vaccination Certificate.
  • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate, taken 72 hours before departure. Other tests such as antibody tests, NHS COVID-19 Test certificates, COVID-19 Rapid PCR tests and home testing kits are not accepted in Dubai. Children below 12 years of age are exempt from testing.
  • Travellers may be required to take another COVID-19 PCR test upon arrival at Dubai international airport.
  • Have a mandatory Travel Insurance that covers COVID-19 medical treatment and other hospitalisation costs.

Singapore – Singapore is open for travel. Indians who meet Singapore’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Singapore has established a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) programme with few countries including India, to facilitate smooth travel to Singapore by individuals who are fully vaccinated.
  • Only fully vaccinated travellers can apply for a VTL. Unvaccinated children below 12 years of age  do not need to apply for a VTL pass to enter Singapore.
  • The VTL is a mandatory requirement for applying for the Singapore visa and travelling to Singapore. Without a VTL, Singapore visa applications wont be accepted.
  • The countries eligible for the VTL are India, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Canada, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Maldives, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Travellers are required to undergo two PCR tests; one test 48 hours before departure and the other test on-arrival at Singapore airport. Children aged 2 years and below are not required to take any tests.
  • Upon arrival at Singapore airport, travellers must present the VTL pass, vaccination certificate, negative pre-departure PCR Test, self-isolation address and mobile device with TraceTogether App among other documents.
  • Have Travel Insurance for the entire duration of their stay, with a minimum coverage of S$30,000 for COVID-19-related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs.

United Kingdom – The UK is open for travel. Indians who meet UK’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Present a Vaccination Certificate against COVID-19 issued in the departure country, or other selected countries.
  • Fully vaccinated individuals and under 18s are exempt from quarantine, pre-departure testing, and post-arrival testing on arrival day, but but they must book and pay for a PCR test on or before day two of their arrival.
  • Non-vaccinated travelers can also visit the UK, but are subject to additional testing and quarantine requirements. They are required to show a pre-departure negative test and book and pay for a day two and day eight PCR test, as well as, subjected to 10-day quarantine (at home or the place they are staying). Vaccinated travellers do not need to quarantine.
  • All UK arrivals must complete a Passenger Locator Form before arriving in the UK.

The United State of America– The US is open for travel. Indians who meet the US immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Fully vaccinated travellers from India, Britain, Ireland, China, India, South Africa, Iran, Brazil and the 26 Schengen countries in Europe including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Greece among others, as well as Britain, Ireland, China, India, South Africa, Iran and Brazil can travel to the US.
  • All travellers must present their Vaccination Certificate before departure.
  • Before arriving in the US:
    • All travellers, aged 2 years and above, regardless of vaccination status, must provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test, taken 24 hours before departure or
    • If you recovered recently from COVID-19, you must provide documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before departure and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel.
  • After arriving in the US:
    • Present proof of COVID-19 vaccination (certificate).

Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka is open for travel. Indians who meet Sri Lanka’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • All travellers, regardless of vaccination status, I.e. fully vaccinated, not-fully vaccinated or not-vaccinated can travel to Sri Lanka.
  • Children below 12 years of age are exempted from on-arrival and exit PCR / Rapid Antigen tests.
  • Travellers must have a mandatory COVID-19 Travel Insurance of 12 USD with one month cover of 50,000 USD.
  • Fully vaccinated Travellers
  • Before boarding:
    • Vaccination Certificate.
    • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test report.
    • Purchase mandatory Travel Insurance.
  • On arrival:
    • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR report, taken within 72 hours prior to boarding. Children below 12 years of age do not require any tests.
    • Vaccination certificate.
    • Submit Health Declaration Form.
    • No on arrival PCR tests required for fully-vaccinated people.
  • Not-fully-vaccinated and not-vaccinated Travellers
  • Before boarding:
    • Proof of partial vaccination if applicable. (if taken first dose)
    • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test report.
    • Purchase mandatory Travel Insurance.
    • Have a pre-confirmed booking at a Level 1 ‘Safe & Secure Certified’ hotel/s for up to 8 days depending on the duration of stay and vaccination status.  
  • On arrival:
    • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR report, taken within 72 hours before departure. Children below 12 years of age do not require any tests.
    • Vaccination Certificate of partially vaccinated travellers.
    • Submit Health Declaration Form.
    • Undergo on-arrival (Day 1) COVID-19 PCR test at ‘’Safe & Secure Certified L1’’ hotels. Children below 12 years of age do not require to take any tests. However, if the parents / guardians develop symptoms or test positive in on-arrival PCR tests, children will need to undergo PCR tests as well.

Maldives – Maldives is open for travel. Indians who meet the Maldives immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken at least 96 hours before departure. Infants aged 1 and less are exempted from taking tests.
  • Submit Traveler Health Declaration Form within 48 hours, prior to departure to Maldives.
  • No PCR test is required upon arrival in Maldives. However, those who display COVID-19 symptoms, such as temperature above 38 degrees celsius, coughing or sneezing, will be tested for COVID-19.
  • Individuals travelling for tourist purpose are not required to quarantine on arrival in Maldives.
  • Maldives Immigration issues on-arrival visa to all tourists, if the entry requirements are complied.

Mauritius – Mauritius is open for travel. Indians who meet the Mauritius immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Fully vaccinated Travellers
    • Vaccination Certificate.
    • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken within 72 hours before departure.
    • Undergo a PCR test upon arrival at Mauritius airport and on day 5 of your trip.
    • Have a mandatory Travel Insurance that covers COVID-19 medical treatment costs.
    • Submit Completed Health Form upon arrival.
  • Not-vaccinated Travellers
    • Provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken within 72 hours before departure.
    • Undergo a PCR Test upon arrival at Mauritius airport, on day 7 and day 14 of your trip. After a negative PCR Test on day 14, you’re free to explore the island. The cost of these tests is INR 12,000/-. per person.
    • Book a 14-night quarantine stay and stay in your hotel room till the quarantine period ends.
    • Have a mandatory Travel Insurance that covers COVID-19 medical treatment costs.
    • Submit Completed Health Form upon arrival.

Nepal – Nepal is open for travel. Indians who meet Nepal’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Fully vaccinated Travellers
    • Vaccination certificate.
    • A negative PCR COVID-19 test result, taken within 72 hours before departure.
    • Proof of hotel reservation.
    • Copy of mountaineering or trekking permits or any other permits if any.
    • Vaccinated travellers are eligible for Nepal visa on arrival.
  • Not-vaccinated Travellers
    • Unvaccinated travellers are required to apply for Nepal visa in advance, present their itinerary and have travel insurance. Visa on arrival is suspended for unvaccinated travellers.
    • A negative PCR COVID-19 test result, taken within 72 hours before departure.
    • Proof of hotel reservation.
    • Copy of mountaineering or trekking permits or any other permits if any.
    • Quarantine in an approved hotel for 10 days (at own cost). On the 11th day, if the test report is negative, travellers are free to explore the country.
  • All travellers, regardless of vaccination status, must submit a Health Form before arrival.

Turkey – Turkey is open for travel. Indians who meet Turkey’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • Have a Vaccination Certificate.
  • Provide a negative PCR test result, taken within 72 hours before departure. However, children under 12 years of age are exempt from testing.
  • Random PCR tests may be conducted on travellers upon arrival. Officials will undergo a brief medical check, including temperature controls. Travellers who have not displayed any COVID-19 symptoms can continue their journey.
  • Vaccinated travellers are exempt from quarantine if provide a valid vaccination certificate.
  • Unvaccinated travellers are required to quarantine for 14 days and can move out after the test comes out negative on the 14th day.
  • Provide accommodation address and contact information upon arrival.
  • Submit Traveler Entry Form online 4 days before arrival in Turkey.

France – France is open for travel. Indians who meet France immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • All travellers, regardless of vaccination status, must present a negative PCR test result or Antigen test, taken within 48 hours before departure. Children below 12 years of are exempted from testing.
  • Travellers may be required to undertake an antigen test upon arrival at France airport.
  • Fully vaccinated Travellers
    • Vaccination certificate.
  • Not-vaccinated Travellers
    • Undertake an Antigen test upon arrival at France airport.
    • Register before departure on the Digital platform éOS-COVID  
    • Self-isolate for 7 days and can move out on the 7th day after the PCR test report result is negative.
    • Give a compelling reason to be allowed entry into France.

Spain – Spain is open for travel. Indians who meet Spain’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • All travellers must provide a negative PCR test result, taken within 72 hours before departure.
  • Travellers recently recovered from COVID-19 are exempt from testing requirements and may provide proof of a positive NAAT test, taken at least 11 days before departure.  
  • Fully vaccinated travellers must present their Vaccination Certificate. Children above the age of 12 years also need to be vaccinated.
  • Health screenings and temperature checks may be conducted upon arrival in Spain. Travellers displaying any symptoms may be required to undergo PCR tests.
  • Complete and submit a Health Control Form before travel to Spain and obtain the QR code to present it at boarding and at health controls upon arrival in Spain.
  • Children under 12 years of age are exempted from presenting vaccination, diagnostic or clearance certificate. However, they must complete and submit the Health Control Form.

Germany – Germany is open for travel. Indians who meet Germany’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • All travellers, above 6 years of age must submit proof of testing, proof of recovery or proof of vaccination. PCR tests or antigen tests should not be older than 48 hours before departure.
  • Fully vaccinated travellers must present their Vaccination Certificate:
    • If you were vaccinated with Covidshield, your vaccination certificate must contain your passport number or date of birth. Reference to Aadhaar number is not sufficient.
    • Travellers vaccinated with Covaxin or any other vaccine not recognised by the Paul Ehrlich Institute must carry a negative PCR test report result, not older than 72 hours before departure. Please note that in these cases, travel is permitted only if there are urgent reasons for entry.
  • Unvaccinated children below 12 of age can enter Germany with proof of a negative PCR test result, when accompanied by at least one fully vaccinated parent. Children under the age of 6 years do not require proof of a negative PCR test result.
  • No quarantine is required for Indian travellers.

South Africa – South Africa is open for travel. Indians who meet South Africa’s immigration regulations can enter the country following the rules outlined below.

  • All travellers, regardless of vaccination status, must provide a negative PCR test result, taken within 72 hours before departure. Children below 5 years of age are exempt from testing.
  • Upon arrival, all travellers will be screened for any COVID-19 symptoms. If the traveller displays any COVID-19 symptoms, they will be required to take a mandatory PCR test (at their own cost). if the result comes positive, the traveller will need to quarantine at a designated place for 10 days at their own expense.
  • Travellers from India are not required to quarantine upon arrival in South Africa.

Countries not open for travel right now:

  • Malaysia – Closed for tourism until further notice.
  • Thailand – The Visa and Consular section of Thailand is closed from 10th Jan,2022 until further notice. Please visit the Thai Embassy website for latest travel updates.
  • China – Not open for tourism and is currently not issuing any tourist visas for Indians.
  • Israel – No longer allowing tourists into the country.
  • Australia – Closed for tourism until further notice. Only full vaccinated Australian citizens, permanent residents and immediate family members are allowed to travel to Australia.
  • New Zealand – Closed for tourism until further notice.
  • Netherlands – Closed for tourism until further notice.
  • Hong Kong – Closed for tourism and has banned all flights till 4th Feb coming from 8 countries — including India, France, Pakistan, France, Australia, Canada, the Philippines, UK and US.
