World’s Most Powerful Passports In 2023 Revealed! Check Out India’s Rank

So, the Henley Passport Index report of the world’s most and least powerful passport was released recently!

Any guesses as to which country topped the list??

For the 5^th consecutive time, Japan has retained its position of being the world’s most powerful passports with access to a whopping 193 destinations (out of 227). South Korea and Singapore tied in for the 2^nd place with visa-free access to 192 destinations. Having a score of 190 visa-free/visa-on-arrival destinations, Germany and Spain are ranked 3^rd globally. Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg share the 4^th spot with a score of 189 visa-free/visa-on-arrival destinations. Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands secured the 5^th rank with a score of 188 destinations whereas France, Ireland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom share the 6^th spot with 187 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations. The countries on the 7^th spot that can visit 186 destinations visa-free are Belgium, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States. Everyone’s favorite holiday destination Dubai (UAE) took the 15^th spot.

Afghanistan is at the bottom of the Henley Passport Index 2023 as the least powerful passport with access to just 27 destinations. Iraq and Syria have made slight progress wherein its passport holders can now visit 29 and 30 countries without a prior visa, but still, they are at the bottom of the list. Pakistan and Yemen are also among the least powerful passports on the index.

India ranks 85^th in the world’s most powerful passport report by the Henley Passport Index 2023. The Indian passport now has visa-free access to 59 destinations worldwide in Q1 of 2023. (as compared to 60 destinations in Q1 of 2022)

The Henley Passport Index is an authoritative ranking of passports across the globe based on the number of destinations the passport holders can travel to without a visa. A fresh list of the world’s most powerful passports is released every year. The Index’s historical data shows us how the strength of a passport has changed over the years, which ultimately transforms the power of diplomatic relations with other countries. The Henley’s Passport Index 2023 was released on 10^th January 2023 providing us with a fascinating insight into the post-pandemic world of travel. And it seems like South-Asian nations have maintained their hold on their positions with the world’s most powerful passports this year as well.

The Henley Passport Index is carefully curated by ‘Henley & Partners’ which is a London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports from across the world based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which is further enhanced by Henley & Partners.

For the last 18 years, the Henley Passport Index is a one of its kind ranking list that is used to assess where a passport ranks on the mobility spectrum globally. It provides us with an idea of the world’s most powerful passports as well as the weakest passports. As per the official release, “The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations, giving users the most extensive and reliable information about their global access and mobility.” This Index, which is updated quarterly, is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states to assess where a passport ranks on the global mobility reference.
