The G20 or Group of Twenty is a premier forum that works towards international economic cooperation. This group plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on major international economic issues. These member countries make up around 85 percent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population. Every year members of the G20, guest countries and international organisations come together to discuss these issues at the summit. The first G20 Summit was held in 2008 in Washington, US. Since then the G20 Summit 2023 is going to be the 18th meeting of the G20 Group. International leaders, heads of international organisations and regional organisations will be flying to New Delhi, India to take part in the G20 Summit 2023.

The presidency-holding country holds the summit every year. The G20 Summit India location is the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. With the culmination of India’s year-long G20 Presidency, the summit will be concluded with the adoption of a G20 Leaders’ Declaration. India has been offered the G20 Presidency from 1st December 2022 to 30th November 2023, with the troika comprising Indonesia (the previous presidency), India, and Brazil (the incoming presidency. The dates for the summit are 9th September 2023- 10th September 2023. Delegates will be arriving in Delhi by 8th September. Hence for 3 days, the city will be under severe restrictions.

The G20 Member Countries include- Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and the European Union. All other Heads of State will be attending the summit. Except for Russia and China, they will be sending other senior officials. 

The regular G20 attending International organisations include the UN, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB), the World Health Organization (WHO), the WTO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). As the presidency holders, India has also invited certain guest countries and international and regional organisations. Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and UAE are the guest countries.

The theme for the Summit according to the G20 Website is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One Earth, One Family, One Future”. The theme adheres to the Indian values that all living beings on the earth are equally important. The website also throws spotlight on the other theme- LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), “with its associated, environmentally sustainable and responsible choices, both at the level of individual lifestyles as well as national development, leading to globally transformative actions resulting in a cleaner, greener and bluer future.” 

“The G20 Logo draws inspiration from the vibrant colours of India’s national flag – saffron, white and green, and blue. It juxtaposes planet Earth with the lotus, India’s national flower that reflects growth amid challenges. The Earth reflects India’s pro-planet approach to life, one in perfect harmony with nature,”- Government Press Release.
