“Jai Ho jai Ho shankara, Bholenath shankara
Aadi dev Shankara, hey Shivay Shankara”

Does this song remind you of the magnificent Kedarnath temple and does it make you feel that you need to plan a Kedarnath tour and capture some beautiful moments at the temple and post them on social media? Nowadays, social media has become an essential aspect of people’s lives, particularly for influencers and YouTubers who often go to any extent to gain likes and views on their videos and posts. It has become incredibly simple to go viral by doing something out of the box that can propel them into the spotlight.

However, the recent incident involving the influencer proposal in front of the Kedarnath temple in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand gained widespread attention but subsequently caused them trouble. As a result, authorities have decided that mobile phones would be strictly prohibited at this sacred location. The Badri Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has termed this a trend that is hurting the shrine’s religious sanctity and disrespecting sentiments with objectionable behavior.

Speaking about the viral video, a YouTuber influencer named Vishakha, proposed to her boyfriend within the premises of Kedarnath, right in front of the temple. She recorded this moment and shared the video on social media, which went viral. Consequently, both the temple committee and many individuals expressed their dissatisfaction, as such videos tend to offend the sentiments of devotees and have a detrimental effect on the faith of those who visit the temple as admirers.

After the incident, the Badri Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) filed a complaint with senior police officials, urging them to take strict action against individuals who record videos within the temple premises. The committee’s letter expressed concern that such actions not only offend religious sentiments but also emphasized the need for strict actions to prevent future occurrences.

Furthermore, they also mentioned that they are planning to set up a cloakroom, where devotees can deposit their mobile devices, aiming to effectively eliminate such practices in the future. Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee has also put up boards at various places in the temple premises which read, ‘Do not enter the temple premises with mobile phones; any kind of photography and videography is completely prohibited inside the temple; and you are under the surveillance of CCTV cameras’.

However, in our technologically advanced era, it’s hard to imagine going anywhere without our mobile phones, due to security concerns, privacy preservation, religious beliefs, and maintaining a serene environment, there are still places in India where the use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited.
