What is a Student Pass in Malaysia?

The prospective students need to apply for a student pass, which is a permit to stay in Malaysia for the duration of their course. Once they receive the student pass, they are guaranteed to receive a Malaysia Student Visa. The Malaysian educational institutes take responsibility of issuing the student pass on behalf of the students. The students need to focus on obtaining the visa approval letter (VAL) from the chosen institution.

Document requirement to apply for a Malaysia Student Visa

  • Duly filled student visa application form
  • Offer letter from the educational institution in Malaysia
  • Academic Transcripts (diplomas, secondary and post-secondary qualifications)
  • English language proficiency test certificates such TOEFL and IELETS
  • Test scores of GMAT, GRE, depending on the program you have applied for
  • Passport ( must be valid for at least 1 year)
  • Passport size colored photographs
  • Proof of full-time study course

Once you have collected all the documents in place, you need to send them to your host educational institution.

Steps to obtain your Malaysia Student Visa

Step 1: Apply through your host institution directly

To obtain a student pass, you can send your application either online or offline, it varies from institution to institution. Application forms to apply for the student pass can be downloaded from the website of Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education.

  • For online applicants: After sending your documents along with the filled-in form online to the university where you have been shortlisted, they will process your student pass. Normally, it takes around 2 weeks for a Malaysian university to issue the student for international students.
  • For offline applicants: There are few universities who may ask for offline submission of application along with the required documents. In that case, you can send the documents directly to the university and wait till you receive your VAL.

Step 2: Wait for the Confirmation of Acceptance

The step requires you to wait for the confirmation of acceptance. Once you have submitted all your documents and application form the Malaysian Immigration Department will issue the VAL to your host university. Once your host university receives your letter of visa acceptance from Immigration department, they will send it over to the student in their home country.

Step 3:  Inform the institution

Make sure before you board your flight to Malaysia, you inform your institute about your flight and arrival date and time. The host institution will send a representative to pick you at the Immigration check-point upon your arrival.

Step 4: Get the student pass sticker

Once you have arrived in Malaysia, within 2 weeks, your passport will be submitted to the Immigration Department and a student pass sticker will be affix to your passport.
