In a recent development, Malaysia has been added to the growing list of countries where Indians can travel visa free. From 1st December 2023, Indian and Chinese nationals visiting Malaysia for tourism purposes can enter without a Malaysia visa. The Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced this policy change in a meeting in Putrajaya. The PM also mentioned the waiver was in addition to existing visa exemptions enjoyed by some ASEAN countries, some Gulf countries and some Western countries. Despite the exemption, Indian nationals will have to go through top security screening. “Initial screenings will be conducted for all tourists and visitors to Malaysia. Security is a different matter. If there are criminal records or the risk of terrorism, they will not be allowed to enter. That comes under the authority of the security forces and immigration,” says the Prime Minister.

Seeing the influx of Indian tourists, Thailand recently became one of the visa free countries for Indians. In an effort to boost tourism, the Thailand Visa for Indians is free for now. The 30-day visa-free entry is for Indians entering Thailand for tourism purposes only. Other than Indians, even Taiwanese nationals can enter Thailand visa free. Thailand will remain visa free entry for Indians until 10th May, 2024. “We will provide visa-free entry to India and Taiwan because a lot of their people like to travel to Thailand,” says Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavision.

Sri Lanka

The country has announced this visa-free initiative for India and six other countries including China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. “We are expecting to increase tourist arrivals to five million over the coming years,” says the Sri Lankan tourist ministry.
