For the 5th consecutive time, Japan has retained its position of being the world’s most powerful passports with access to a whopping 193 destinations (out of 227). South Korea and Singapore tied in for the 2nd place with visa-free access to 192 destinations. Having a score of 190 visa-free/visa-on-arrival destinations, Germany and Spain are ranked 3rd globally. Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg share the 4th spot with a score of 189 visa-free/visa-on-arrival destinations. Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands secured the 5th rank with a score of 188 destinations whereas France, Ireland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom share the 6th spot with 187 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations. The countries on the 7th spot that can visit 186 destinations visa-free are Belgium, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States. Everyone’s favorite holiday destination Dubai (UAE) took the 15th spot.
Afghanistan is at the bottom of the Henley Passport Index 2023 as the least powerful passport with access to just 27 destinations. Iraq and Syria have made slight progress wherein its passport holders can now visit 29 and 30 countries without a prior visa, but still, they are at the bottom of the list. Pakistan and Yemen are also among the least powerful passports on the index.

The Henley Passport Index is carefully curated by ‘Henley & Partners’ which is a London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports from across the world based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which is further enhanced by Henley & Partners.
For the last 18 years, the Henley Passport Index is a one of its kind ranking list that is used to assess where a passport ranks on the mobility spectrum globally. It provides us with an idea of the world’s most powerful passports as well as the weakest passports. As per the official release, “The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations, giving users the most extensive and reliable information about their global access and mobility.” This Index, which is updated quarterly, is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states to assess where a passport ranks on the global mobility reference.
