The History
The Frying Pan Tower Hotel gets its name from its unique shape, constructed in 1964 as a lighthouse. It was a former coast guard station constructed to direct ships and boats along the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean near the coast, known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The structures were called the Texas Light Houses and made to look like oil rigs. After 1979, when the beacon was automatic, the towers had been left uninhabited for years to rust till they were finally declared as dangerous as dismantled.
The tower is the indicator to the entry point into the shallow waters or the Frying Pan shoals, a skillet-shaped area. Seven towers were constructed, of which only three, including the Frying Pan Tower Hotel, stand today. The other two are North Carolina’s Diamond Shoals Light and Virginia’s Chesapeake Light.
The tower has a research centre to map the locations of the hundreds of shipwrecks, of which 130 have been discovered.
The Frying Pan Tower hotel was purchased in 2010 from the US government by Richard Neal, who spent $85,000 on it. Currently, the lighthouse has no owner, as Neal gave up ownership to launch a non-profit organization to care for the maintenance of the lighthouse. You can admire this marvel from the shores of Carolina with the all-inclusive USA tour packages!
