Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, the sloppy summer romance between Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) takes many sour turns. Their reunion after 7 years calls for confrontation. Amidst a heavy downpour, Allie asks Noah why he did not write to her for all these years and Noah replies, “I wrote to you everyday for a year. It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over,” and the two kiss passionately. The heavy rains here symbolize that the two protagonists were ready for a new beginning. This iconic rain scene also received the ‘MTV Best Kiss Award’ in 2005.

Rains are often highly romanticised in Bollywood movies, but this Anurag Basu directorial gives a real touch to the infamous Mumbai rains. Old flames rekindling, married couples cheating, singles meeting for arranged marriages and struggles with oneself, the film is an array of emotions. But there are two constant things in the movie, the Mumbai rains adding realism to the story and composer Pritam and his band making random appearances singing in the rain. Spoilers ahead! A magnum opus, The Shawshank Redemption, is a special feel-good movie that is going to leave you uplifted and rejuvenated. The movie has a remarkable prison-breaking scene as the lead, Andy Dufresne, crawls through ‘five hundred yards of shit-smelling foul sewer’ to escape the Shawshank prison. As he emerges from the sewer Andy is greeted with a heavy downpour, a symbol of washing down both his past and the dirt from the sewer. An all-time Bollywood-Dharma classic, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has one of the most beautiful rain proposal scenes of all time. Rain plays an important supporting actor twice in the movie. First, when Rahul confesses to Anjali that he is in love with another girl. What follows is a heartbroken Anjali, masquerading her tears in the rain. The other time around, the two meet again in a kid’s summer camp where Rahul realises that he has feelings for his best friend Anjali. The two dance together unbothered by the rain, giving the viewers all the butterflies in the world. But there is a further twist in store!

Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Seven Samurai’ uses the weather as a background element to depict the tone of the scene. Rains can be seen slashing at several parts in the movie depicting an uneasy atmosphere. The most famous and iconic rain scene in the movie is the final battle which is fought between the torrential rains. The constant struggle of the samurai and farmers, mixed with the chaos of rain as they slip and struggle in the mud, builds up to be a perfect climax scene.

A treat for the horror buffs, Tumbbad is not for the faint-hearted. The village of Tumbbad is cursed for worshipping a demon. The result of the curse is year-round rainfall. The incessant rains water down on the villagers’ lives and provide a visually striking gloomy atmosphere. This movie doesn’t hold one significant rain scene, but the entire movie serves as one. An iconic American romantic comedy, where Holly and Paul discover their love for each other serves its audience with an iconic rain scene with an understanding of love and commitment. In the climax of the movie as Paul leaves Holly standing in the rain to find the pet cat, Holly comes to a realization and runs after her. A bunch of rag-tag villagers from a drought-prone village fight to get a waiver on an unjust match by a game of cricket and the Britishers are in no mood to spare them. What follows is a nail-biting match between them as the villagers are able to score a perfectly timed victory over the British Raj. After the win as the villagers look up, they see clouds rush in the sky and rain falls over their parched land and hearts. The longness of the villagers and the defeat of an unjust rule give you goosebumps all over. This is undoubtedly one of the most iconic scenes where rain plays a significant role.
