Before going for the US visa application, travelers need to know that there are two types of visa which are defined by the US immigration law:-

  1. Non-immigrant- It is for those people who are going to travel the United States on a temporary basis. Foreign nationals who wish to stay in the United States for a limited period of time and for a specific purpose are issued nonimmigrant visas. These types of US visas are categorized as tourist, business, student or specialty worker document. B1 and B2 visas are nonimmigrant US visas issued to travel to the United States for temporary reasons.
  2. Immigrant- It is for those people who are going to live permanently in the United States. Foreign nationals who wish to live permanently and work in the United States are required to obtain Immigrant visas. This visa category permits the applicant to apply for lawful permanent resident (LPR) status (green card).

Steps to apply for US Visa

For the US visa application, you must go through the following steps carefully.

Step 1:– First you need to fill the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form. Then submit it. All the information given must be correct otherwise the form will be rejected. You will get a DS-160 number that will be required to take the US visa appointment.

Step 2:- After the successful submission of the DS-160 form, you need to pay the visa-fee. For more information, you may read the Bank and Payment Options page.

Step 3:- Now, it is the time to Login with the same details that you used in the visa-fee payment step.

Step 4:- You have to click on Schedule Appointment. You will be scheduled two meetings, one for submitting your biometrics and digital photograph at the US Visa Application Center (OFC) and another one for the US visa interview at the US Consulate.
Here you will have to select the visa type, insert your details and the details of your dependents, choose the location for document delivery location, confirm visa payment and schedule your appointment.

For this OFC appointment, you should carry your passport number, the visa application fee receipt number and the ten digit barcode number which was given on DS-160 confirmation page. At the time of your interview, you must carry a printed copy of your appointment confirmation letter, your DS-160 confirmation page stamped at the U.S. Visa Application Center, your current and all old passports, supporting documents as per your visa type. This procedure may take six weeks or more, so be prepared before time.

Once your US Visa gets approved, you must get several other things done before flying to the USA. Before leaving your home, the things you need to do are proper vaccinations, travel insurance, booking flight tickets, booking accommodation for at least the first night, making budgets and packing the required stuff. Remember to take the flight tickets, your travel itinerary, copy of travel insurance, power adapters, chargers with all other packing stuff.
