A visit to Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, where you can ride a sampan (a non-motorized traditional wooden boat) in the Selangor River and witness the dancing and flashing fire flies in their natural habitat, should definitely be on your trip to Malaysia.
Malaysia is blessed with a beautiful coastline and several exotic islands! It will be a shame to not to take advantage of them. Sun, sand and beaches are loved by all, but what truly takes the breath away is unmatched beauty found under the water. This offbeat park is the home to the Mulu Pinnacles that will be a delight for hiking lovers, with limestone formations that are jagged and look other worldly, any one can have an out of this world experience. Another hidden feature, the Mulu Cave System, the longest in the world by surface area has been attracting a lot of scientists, but is generally hidden from tourists. Various caves full of stalactites and stalagmites; consisting of old coral structures and home to large colonies of bats are just some interesting sights you ought not to miss.
The state of Sarawak has beautiful waterfront in Kuching, alongside an amazing garden with over 75,000 plants of 82 genera solely dedicated to orchids. With eye catching flowers such as Lady’s slipper and flowers that stink like Bulbophyllum Beccarii, you will come across many orchids that are on display here. Apart from the display area the garden also has a nursery in the 15 acre space of the property. Don’t forget to grab your cameras to capture the beauty of flowers and cherish them forever.
After visiting flowers it’s now turn to visit butterflies! With 400 different varieties of flora and fauna, Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm is a utopia on its own. Entopia has 2 worlds – The Natureland and The Cocoon. The Natureland lets you observe varieties of invertebrates and animals in their natural habitat and has the largest butterfly garden in Malaysia, where more than 15,000 butterflies roam around freely throughout the day. The Cocoon on the other hand is a learning exhibition where interactive self edu-stations and walk through experiences educates the visitors about various species of animals and plants housed in the facility.
With history of human habitation from 40,000 years ago, Niah Caves are a popular archaeological site in Malaysia. With clear evidence in the form of cave paintings and several remnants of mammals and humans gone by found in the huge underground caves, this is a great place for trekking. If you are looking to appreciate the beauty of nature in solitude, this offbeat historic location should definitely be on your next Malaysia holiday.
Salar De Uyuni of Malaysia, located off the coast of Jeram Fishing Village this offbeat beach turns into a huge mirror twice a month – on new moon and full moon. The crystal clear waters and the island’s sandy beaches give a perfect mirror like reflection during these days. If you like photography take some toys along and pose for interesting pictures using forced perception and have a fun filled day at the beach.
Pulau Lalang and Pulau Rumbia are the places to be if you want to experience the “Blue Tears” phenomenon first hand. The luminescent plankton phenomenon that emits a blue glow, was once harmed and now is fully recovered and has been gracing the white sandy beaches of Pulau Sembilan with its presence. You definitely don’t want to miss it. Apart from this the island has rich marine life in the surrounding waters.
Malaysian Borneo is a heaven for nature lovers. Extensive greenery, beautiful beaches and home to various special species such as Rafflesia flower (world’s largest flower with a very peculiar stinky scent), last surviving Orangutans (last great apes) in Asia, Sun Bears with their unique markings at the chest, Proboscis monkey (males have a very distinctive nose to attract females), Asian Elephants and also the Malaysian national bird – Rhinoceros Hornbill (a species of Toucans), Borneo is a world of its own. Add to it the Mount Kinabalu and you have everything from sea to mountains untouched in its all natural glory.
It is no doubt that Malaysia is filled with beautiful and breathtaking places, and being a hot favourite among travellers, its bound to be crowded during most of the year. So take the road less travelled, go offbeat and experience Malaysia’s untouched beauty.
