MS Dhoni has been one of CSK’s most loyal players. In the inaugural edition in 2008, Dhoni was purchased by Chennai Super Kings for a bawling Rs. 9.5 crore. CSK team went on to qualify for the finals for nearly 8 times due to the outstanding leadership of MS Dhoni. England’s bustling all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was purchased for a whopping Rs. 9.8 crore by Chennai Super Kings. However, Flintoff failed to justify his hefty paycheck as he featured in barely three matches that year. Without any remarkable significance., IPL 2009 was Flintoff’s first and final appearance in the Indian Premier League.

Shane Bond – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Former New Zealand Speedster Shane Bond emerged as the most expensive player in 2010 when the Kolkata Knight Riders claimed him ahead of the Deccan Chargers for Rs. 4.8 crore. By making the highest bid, KKR finally grabbed the paceman. Bond had a great inning as he went on to pick 9 wickets for the KKR franchise.

Kieron Pollard – Mumbai Indians (MI)

  • Price – Rs. 4.8 crore
  • Year – 2010

Kioron Pollard is an IPL Veteran. The West Indies all-rounder was sold for a whopping Rs. 4.8 crore to Mumbai Indians – emerging as the most expensive player apart from Kiwi player Shane Bond in the third edition of the Indian Premier League. Interestingly, there was a bidding war from four franchises in the auction, with MI finally winning him over. Gautam Gambhir – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

  • Year – 2011

Gautam Gambhir joined Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 14.9 crore, thus becoming the most expensive player in 2011. His incredible performances and leadership between 2011 and 2017 resulted in KKR becoming the Indian Premier League. IPL champions in 2012 and 2014.

Ravindra Jadeja – Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

  • Price – Rs. 12.8 crore
  • Year – 2012

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings for Rs. 12.8 crore. Jadeja impressed by picking outstanding 12 wickets in 19 matches at an economy rate of 7.80. He was an important member of CSK team until the team was banned for two years.

Glenn Maxwell – Mumbai Indians (MI)

  • Year – 2013

The Australian all rounder is one of the most explosive players. In IPL 2013 auction, Glen Maxwell was sold for hefty Rs. 6.3 crore which was the highest amount a player sold in that season. Yuvraj Singh – Delhi Daredevils (DD)

  • Year – 2015

Yuvraj Singh was the most expensive player for the second consecutive year in IPL 2015. Royal Challengers tried hard to get Yuvraj back at the auction, but had to give up to Delhi Daredevils for a staggering sum of Rs. 16 crore. It is still the highest ever bid in the history of the IPL auctions. Yuvraj failed to pull off anything special in IPL 2015 as the all-rounder scored just 248 runs in 14 matches. Later, he was released by the franchise in 2016.

Shane Watson – Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Jaydev Unadkat (RR) and Varun Chakravarthy (KXIP)

  • Team – Rajasthan Royals and Kings Punjab
  • Price – Rs. 8.4 crore
  • Year – 2019

Indian cricketers Jaydev Unadkat (RR) and Varun Chakravarthy (KXIP) were the most expensive players in IPL auction 2019. Both had winning bids for Rs. 8.4 crore. While left pacer Jaydev was bought by Rajasthan Royals, Varun was picked by Kings Punjab. Both the players couldn’t live up to the expectations – Unadkat had a lukeworm IPL 2019 and failed terribly at being an effective left-arm seamer. Varun had the worst debut in IPL history and was ruled out of IPL shortly afterwards due to his injuries.

Pat Cummins – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

There was an intense bidding race between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, however Kolkata Knight Riders entered the race and signed Cummins.
