For a long time, man has been attempting to learn new information about the Moon. The Chandrayaan programme launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is India’s lunar exploration mission. Chandrayaan-3 is India’s follow-on to its previous Lunar mission – Chandrayaan-2.
As we saw the successful launch of India’s third mission – Chandrayaan-3, let us learn more about ISRO’s Lunar Exploration mission’s 3rd attempt. An attempt to ‘bring the Moon closer to us’.
ISRO Chandrayaan-3 Launch Date and Time

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to make its third attempt at landing a spacecraft on the Moon. ISRO initiated the successful launch at 2:35 pm on Friday, July 14, 2023 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
If we see a successful ‘soft landing’ then India would be the 4th country after the US, Russia and China to have completed this mission. Completing a 40-day journey, the spacecraft is expected to land on the Moon’s surface on 23rd August 2023.

Objective of Chandrayaan-3
The aim is to land on the moon’s South Pole, a region with potential water ice and resources.
This mission’s main objective is to strengthen India’s technical abilities in the field and successfully soft land on the Moon. The four scientific payloads on the lander will study lunar quakes, thermal properties of the lunar surface, study the chemical and mineral composition of the lunar surface and determine the composition of elements such as magnesium, aluminium and iron in the lunar soil and rocks and a passive experiment to help accurately measure the distance between Earth and Moon. One of the payloads is from NASA.

Similar to previous Chandrayaana missions, the Chandrayaan-3 lander name is ’ Vikram’ which will touch down on the Moon’s surface. The Launch Vehicle Mark-III, (LVM-III) is launching this space mission. The moonlander Vikram is perched on a GSLV Mark 3 heavy lift launch vehicle- called ‘Bahubali rocket’. The spacecraft will gradually escape Earth’s gravity and slingshot to the Moon. After a certain time, the lander carrying the rover will separate from the propulsion module. Then it will begin to descend towards the Moon’s surface. The spacecraft will spend one Lunar Day on the Moon’s surface. This equals to 14 days on Earth.

ISRO launched Chandrayaan-2 in July 2019 to explore the South pole of the Moon. The spacecraft’s velocity was quite high leading to a crash. However, the Orbiter was successful in gathering data. It built on the discovery of water from Chandrayaan-1 and found signatures of water at all latitudes. Talking about the difference between Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3, the velocity problem has been taken into consideration. The number of engines on the lander has been reduced from 5 to 4 with an updated software. Not only this, Chandrayaan-3 did not carry an Orbiter and will use the already existing one from the previous launch.

After the launch, ISRO Chairman said “Chandrayaan-3 was successfully launched in the desired orbit”. This was the first successful step but more is yet to come. The Chandrayaan-3 latest update can be found on ISRO’s official website.
