“Long years ago… we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes, but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance……….
From this speech by then PM Jawaharlal Nehru on 15th August 1957 to celebrating 75 years of freedom with the 76th Independence Day 2022, our country has come a long way. 15th August is celebrated annually in India with great pomp and show as it commemorates the day, India finally got independence from over 200 years of British Raj. This event is of great significance for Indians to not only celebrate independence but also pay homage to the martyrs.
Official Celebrations:
For 75 years the country has celebrated Independence Day as a gala occasion. Most of the celebration starts in the morning. There is unfurling of the Indian Flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi, by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister gives a speech that is televised for the nation. Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes are held across all states by respective Chief Ministers.

Other public celebrations:
Kite flying has attained great significance on this day. Children and adults gather to fly their tricolor kites. It is a celebration of a new, sovereign and free India.
Plans for celebrating Independence Day 2022:
Independence Day 2022 brings a special edition of the national festival. So, it is bound to be celebrated in the grandest of ways. The Government of India launched the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ campaign to mark 75 years of Independence.
Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav:
The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign was kickstarted on 12th March 2021 and is proposed to be a 15-month long festival to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence. The campaign is set to end on 15th August 2023. Under the campaign, several initiatives will be happening.
For Independence Day 2022, the GOI has rolled out certain initiatives for a series of celebrations. Some of these initiatives include:
- ‘Azadi ki Rail Gadi Aur Station’- This was a week-long celebration in July. Some important trains and stations, that were crucial in the freedom struggle, were decorated and stations lit up with shows on the freedom struggle.
- Motorcycle Ride to Kargil- Organized by the Border Roads Organization, this was a bike rally to Kargil, to commemorate 23 years of victory in the Kargil War against Pakistan.
- India vs World XI- The BCCI is likely to organize a cricket match between teams of current and veteran players from India and one team from around the world.
- ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’- This campaign would encourage Indian citizens to hoist a flag outside their houses to show their ‘love for the nation’. The BMC will provide free flags to every household in Mumbai to commemorate Independence Day 2022.

New Delhi:
As it is the capital of India, Independence day celebrations here are a matter of grandeur. The NDMC has decided to install national flags and lights on all major roads and Lutyens Zone roundabouts, and display short films on the tricolour across LED screens in the New Delhi area. Several campaigns and events will be conducted in the days leading up to the big day. This year the Brihan Mumbai Corporation (BMC) has planned to give free flags to hoist to all the houses in Mumbai, a laser show will be conducted on Marine Drive, 600 hoardings and banners will be put up on BEST buses and various important monuments will be lit-up. The estimated cost of the entire celebration will be about ₹30 crores.
