The travel and tourism industry has been facing some uncertainties and restrictions in the past couple of years. However, the Union Budget 2023 comes as a relief for the tourism sector. FM Nirmala Sitharaman in the latest budget announcements on 1st February 2023 announced advancements in the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ scheme. The Dekho Apna Scheme aims at promoting tourism and encouraging travellers to explore the cultural diversity and heritage of India. In the broader sense, the Dekho Apna Desh scheme focuses on domestic tourism i.e. India travel. It primarily targets middle-class citizens to go for a holiday in India rather than abroad.
In this new plan, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned in Budget 2023 that about 50 tourist destinations across India will be selected to be developed. Apart from a heightened tourism experience, it will also develop employment opportunities in the tourism industry. This in turn will boost the country’s economy.
“The country offers immense attraction for domestic as well as foreign tourists. There is a large potential to be tapped in tourism. The sector holds huge opportunities for jobs and entrepreneurship for youth in particular,” FM Sitharaman said during the announcement of Budget 2023-24. In the budget, Rs. 2400 crore has been allocated to the tourism sector to harness the entrepreneurial potential of youth. Out of Rs. 2,400 crores, a sum of Rs.1742 crores has been allocated towards the development of tourism infrastructure and Rs. 242 crores for branding and promotional activities.
The scheme focuses on the benefit of travellers as well as the tourist destinations’ local people. Travellers will get to enjoy several benefits in hotel rates, travel and entrance fees. Not only this, further those travellers willing to travel to less frequented or far-off destinations will be provided with financial assistance. The government will also encourage tourists to take part in a range of adventurous and cultural activities to promote regional culture. Plans to set up a special website and launch a toll-free helpline number are also underway.
The Finance Minister added, “States would be encouraged to set up such Unity Mall in the capital city or most prominent tourism centre or the financial capital and also provide space for ODOPs and GI products of other states as well”. This means that to help the local economy the government plans on setting up unity malls across prominent tourism sectors. The malls will promote and sell products under the project of ‘one district, one product’. The unity mall will also house other local and handicraft products.
