From losing the chance to host ‘Asia Cup 2022’ due to the country’s ongoing economic crisis to getting all-out in their first match against Afghanistan in the group stage, Sri Lanka was definitely not the desired title contender for the Asia Cup 2022 Champions. However, after the first loss, the team kept moving upward with a spectacular turn-around and became the Asia Cup 2022 Champions. They won their 6th Asia Cup title by beating Pakistan in the final. This was a fairytale night for the crisis-hit nation as they displayed a fabulous night of cricket for the sport-lovers.

Several moments in the match defined this day for Sri Lanka: The Asia Cup 2022 Champions.
Even though Pakistan won the toss, they were seen as sought-after winners of Asia Cup 2022. However, out of the several rare moments of the match, a bat-first win in Dubai was a remarkable instance.
Sri Lanka’s opening batting order failed to put up any runs on the scoreboard. The young-Pakistani bowler Naseem Shah picked a quick first wicket as Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis got out on a duck. From there on Pakistani bowlers broke some successive spells with the ball striking off half the team at 58 runs in 9 overs. Bhanuka Rajapaksa came out to bat when Sri Lanka was 36/3. He smashed 6 fours and 3 sixes and played a solid knock of 71*(45) against the Pakistani pace attack and also won the ‘Player of the Match’. The Sri Lankan batting line-up looked wobbly but the Rajapaksa-Hasaranga stand managed to put up a score of 170/6 for the Pakistani batting lineup to fight against.

For the second innings of the match, Sri Lankan bowler Dilshan Madhushanka had a rather deadly start to his over as he gave away 9 runs in 0 legal deliveries. However, the Lankan bowlers quickly found their momentum as Pramod Madhusan picked 2 wickets of Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman on consecutive deliveries. What managed to somehow float Pakistan’s sinking boat was a faulty knock of 55(49) by Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed’s 32(31). At a point, Pakistan was reeled in from 93/2 to 125/9. Almost every batter failed to even reach double-digits. While the Pakistani batters failed to find a rhythm, Sri Lankan bowlers were having the best time in the middle. Lanka’s Chamika Karunaratne sealed the deal, picking up the last wicket with a fuller one hitting the stumps directly as Haris Rauf clearly missed the ball. We even caught glimpses of the classic Pakistani fielding as the players missed several catches.
The Sri Lankan team portrayed great team effort and walked away as Asia cup 2022 Champions, beating Pakistan by 23 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga’s all-rounder performance of 36(21) and 4-0-27-3 made him a star not only for that night but also ‘Player of the Tournament. The winning prize money of $200,000 makes a soothing pillow for the team owing to the country’s ongoing economic crisis.
