Remember these infamous dialogues- ‘Yeh meri Expertise Nahi hai’, ‘Yeh Sab Doglapan Hai’ and ‘Ham Bhi Bana lenge’? While India was already knee-deep into a plethora of Reality TV shows mostly related to dance, music and entertainment, Shark Tank India came in as a breath of fresh air. We Indians love everything business and this reality TV show fascinated a huge part of the Indian audience.

However, Shark Tank India is basically an Indian franchise of the world-popular, several awards-winning show Shark Tank. Even the concept of Shark Tank America is based on the format of Dragon’s Den. Shark Tank first aired on ABC Network in August 2009. The hit show, over the course of years also won several awards.

Concept of Shark Tank:

The premise of the show is quite simple. It features self-made multi-millionaires called ‘sharks’. They are potential investors for various business presentations. The presentations are made by aspiring entrepreneurs who come on the show to display their company or product. The entrepreneurs ask for a sum in exchange for a certain percentage of equity in the business. If the sharks are impressed with the pitch, product and valuation of the company in general they can look to invest in the company. The sharks invest their own money. But most of the time, the sharks find fault or weakness in either the business model, valuation or the product itself. If all the sharks opt out, the entrepreneurs have to leave empty-handed.

What makes the concept of the show interesting is all the tension and drama of pitch meetings and the varied kinds of interactions between the sharks and entrepreneurs. The American version of Shark Tank got very popular. With 14 seasons to date, over 30 countries have produced local versions of the show including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, etc.

Season 1 of Shark Tank India was a smashing hit, with 7 popular Indian sharks on board from different fields. After a smashing hit in the first season, Shark Tank India Season 2 is currently on-air. However, it is receiving mixed reviews from netizens.
