Carrying prohibited items on flight or overweight luggage can cost you time at the check-in.
While different airlines have different luggage policies for domestic and international airlines, there are some basic guidelines regarding what luggage you are allowed and what luggage you’re not allowed on the aircraft.
In India, domestic flights allow a checked in luggage of 15kgs and a cabin luggage of 7kgs, which also has certain specific dimensions so that it fits in the overhead bin. For international flights, cabin baggage typically allows 7-10 kg, while checked baggage limits are 23 kg in Economy and 32 kg in Business or First Class. When it comes to the items you are allowed to carry as in-flight luggage, there are strict rules and regulation.
Here is a list of items declared prohibited and luggage not allowed in aircrafts operating in India.
1. Sharp/ weapon like objects:
Objects like lighters, scissors, sharp-edged objects, knives, blades, razors etc. are not allowed on the aircraft. These are examples of objects that are considered as potential weapons and hence, for the safety of all passengers, these are not allowed in luggage in the aircraft. If you need to carry objects like scissors or razors, you may need to put them in the check-in luggage, post declaring and confirming with the airline you are flying with.
2. Sporting Equipment/ goods:
Sporting equipment like bats, golf clubs, baseball bats, bows, arrows, hockey sticks etc. are among the luggage not allowed on aircrafts because again, these may be considered as threatening, hazardous weapons and hence, basic safety guidelines, they are prohibited in the in-flight luggage. There are certain guidelines regarding carrying sports equipment on aircraft. 3. Ammunition:
When all the objects stated above are prohibited for the safety of the passengers and others, it is but obvious that no kinds of firearms and guns are allowed on the aircraft for safety and security reasons.
4. Drugs and illegal substances:
These are not only prohibited on aircrafts but are also illegal. Ensure that you keep an eye on your luggage from the moment you arrive at the airport to check in and security check to ensure that your luggage doesn’t get targeted for some illegal smuggling. Drugs are in no way allowed in luggage on an aircraft no matter whether a domestic or an international flight.
5. Limited liquids in cabin baggage:
Liquids are only allowed in separate sealed packets of 100ml quantity in total for in-flight luggage The purpose of these limited liquids is that they are meant for the journey in case you need it. Otherwise, liquids are not allowed in the luggage in a cabin.
6. Edible substances in International traveling:
When traveling to foreign shores, you need to declare any edibles you might be carrying in your luggage, as a part of your student essentials This is done to ensure that you are not carrying any substances that aren’t allowed in the country to ensure health safety and security of the citizens of their country. If you do not declare the substances you’re carrying and it shows up in the security scanner then you might be liable for further scrutiny by the security officials because of which you might also miss your flight for simply no reason at all. You may also end up paying a hefty fine. So, the golden rule is, declare what you are carrying.
A sense of judgment of your own luggage will help you save time and meeting with the security authorities regarding any objections. Just glance across your luggage while packing and think of anything that could be viewed or classified as an objectionable material/ object or considered threatening to the safety of others and just remove it. Simple!
