The Indian cinema has been prevalent for more than a century now. Our films are known to be layered with a lot of fine tunes to them. Over the years, these movies have been glamourized, filled with stars and moreover produced for bigger platforms. Held by the Academy of Motion Pictures, the Oscars honour artistic talent in the global film industry. The Academy Awards are highly prestigious and sought after because as they have proven to give winners a solid boost in their careers. The 1st Academy Awards was held in 1929. Officially known as Academy awards, it is popularly known as the Oscars as the statuette resembles ‘Oscar Nelson’.

India does have a remarking history at the Oscars. Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’ was the first Indian film to be nominated for the Oscars in 1957. However, we were not able to win then. Since then Indian artists have been nominated many times for this award. As of Oscars 2023, the coveted golden statuette has only been won 7 times.

The Oscars 2023 just went underway and many film talents from all over the world attended this gala night. 

Oscars 2023, the 95th edition of this prestigious award show, was a highlight for the Indian Cinema with two Oscar wins. The record-breaking movie RRR’s song ‘Naatu Naatu’ was nominated for Best Original Song. ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was nominated for Best Documentary (Short) category. While ‘All That Breathes’ was competing in the Best Documentary (Feature) section.

To top it all, we had Deepika Padukone, a global Indian superstar, as one of the presenters at Oscars 2023. Her rising global popularity, being the face of brands like Louis Vuitton and Qatar Airways has made her capable of being one of the presenters on this esteemed platform. She introduced the award-winning Naatu Naatu performance as, “An irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves to match have made ‘Naatu Naatu’ a global sensation. Do you know Naatu? Because if you don’t you’re about to”. The performance received a standing ovation.

Bhanu Athaiya

The legendary costume designer Bhanu Athaiya was the first Oscar awards winner in India in 1983. She won ‘Best Costume Design’ for dressing up actor Ben Kingsley in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. 

Satyajit Ray

In 1992, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences decided to felicitate Satyajit Ray with an honorary Oscar “in recognition of his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures, and of his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an indelible influence on filmmakers and audiences throughout the world”. While receiving the award Ray was on his deathbed and said “it was the best achievement of my movie-making career”.

Resul Pookutty

One of the Oscar awards winners in India is the famous sound editor, mixer, and cinematic sound designer Resul Pookutty. Resul won the Oscar Award for Best Sound Mixing because of his efforts on ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. He has also worked in several Hollywood, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam movies.

Gulzar and AR Rahman jointly won at the 81st Academy Awards for ‘Jai Ho’- Slumdog Millionaire for Best Original Song in 2009. He wrote the lyrics for the worldwide hit song.

Apart from winning the Best Original Song for Jai Ho in 2009, the music legend also won a second Oscar for Best Original Score for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. Over his career, Rahman has won several national and international accolades. 

For Oscars 2023, nominations from India included: ‘Naatu Naatu’ for Best Original Song. Shaunak Sen and Aman Mann’s ‘All That Breathes’ was nominated in the ‘Best Documentary’ (Feature) category. Lastly, Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was nominated in the Best Documentary Film (Short) category. Out of these three, we won two at the 95th Academy Awards

The Indian duo won at Oscars 2023 for their documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’- a story of an old couple who dedicatedly take care of an orphaned elephant. This award made them the first Indian filmmakers to win an Oscar in a competitive category.

The Best Original Song at the Oscars 2023 was awarded to Naatu Naatu from the Movie RRR. RRR Movie is directed by SS Rajamouli, composed by MM Keeravani, vocals by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava and lyrics by Chandrabose. The shooting location for this song was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s official residence in Kyiv, also known as ‘Mariinsky Palace’. The award-winning song was shot here before the Russia-Ukraine war.
