Odisha’s newest airport is about to see a host of commercial airlines take off this month.
Named Veer Surendra Sai Airport, Jharsuguda airport was upgraded late last year and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22nd September 2018. It is located just 5 kilometres from Jharsuguda town making the airport the perfect launchpad for holidays in Odisha with a swanky new 5,500 square meter terminal that will connect passengers to several domestic destinations including Ranchi, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad and Delhi.
31st March 2019 will see the commencement of operations of 29 daily flights by SpiceJet under the Central Government’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme. The airline will operate flights on the on the Jharsuguda-Delhi-Jharsuguda, Jharsuguda-Hyderabad-Jharsuguda and Jharsuguda-Kolkata-Jharsuguda sectors. Other carriers that currently serve the airport include Air Odisha, Alliance Air, and IndiGo.
The Veer Surendra Sai Airport is only the second in the state after the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneshwar and likely to give Odisha tourism a huge boost.
The region is already a hotbed for tourism with the seaside temples of Puri and Konark drawing in visitors from across the world. Trips to beaches of Chandipur and Gopalpur-on-Sea are also among the most popular trips in winter which happens to be the best time to visit Odisha. Connectvity to the state is likley to increase thanks to the new Jharsuguda Airport.
