International Women’s Day 2023: 13 ‘Firsts’ By Indian Women

As the name suggests, ‘International Women’s Day’ is a global event that not only celebrates the social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women but highlights grave concerns like gender inequality, reproductive rights and violence against women. As every year, International Women’s Day 2023 will be celebrated on 8th March 2023, Wednesday. 

The Purpose of Women’s Day

The idea of celebrating this day was first planted by Clara Zetkin, a communist activist and women’s rights advocate. For the first time, International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. But it was in 1975, that the United Nations officially set the celebration date. The colours- purple, green and white signify the celebrations according to the International Women’s Day website. 

Many countries around the world celebrate International Women’s Day in different ways. Most businesses offer special or discounted deals for Women.

The UN’s theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality’. This theme aims to acknowledge and applaud the contribution of women in the fields of technology and online education.

1. Gita Gopinath

Originally from Kerala, Gita Gopinath became the first woman to assume the position of Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is the first woman and only the second Indian to have got this position. One of the top women achievers in India, she is also the co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. 

2. Hima Das

Belonging to the Dhing Town in Assam, Hima Das is one of the most inspirational females in India. She holds to her name the record as the First Indian Athlete to win gold at the IAAF World U20 Championships in 2018. 

Fun Fact: In 2019, Hima won 5 gold medals in 20 days. 

3. Mary Kom

Mary Kom is one of the most exceptional female role models India has ever seen. She is the only Indian Olympic Boxer to grab the No.1 position in the International Boxing Association after becoming World Amateur Boxing Champion for a record 6 times. Mary also holds the world record for winning a medal in all seven World Championships. 

4. Avani Chaturvedi

Avani Chaturvedi’s name will go down in history as one of the most powerful ladies in Indian history. A young Air Force officer, Avani became the First Indian Woman Fighter Pilot to fly the ‘MiG-21 Bison’ solo, an aircraft known for its highest landing and take-off spread in the world. By making a mark in a male-dominated field Avani has truly made India proud. 

5. Mithali Raj

Mithali Raj is one of the most famous Indian female role models of today’s age. Throughout her career, Mithali has made several achievements and records. Talking about her firsts she is,

  • The First Female Cricketer to win the “Wisden Indian Cricketer of Year”.
  • The First Woman Cricketer who scored 7 consecutive fifties in ODI.
  • The First Woman to play 200 ODI matches.
  • The First Indian Woman Batter to score 2000 runs in T20I cricket and many more.

6. Saina Nehwal

Another one of the inspirational females in India, Saina became the First Indian Woman to win a medal in Badminton at the 2012 Olympic games. In 2015, she became the first Indian woman to secure the No.1 position in world rankings.

7. Arunima Sinha

In 2013, Arunima Sinha became the World’s First Female Amputee to have climbed Mount Everest

8. Kalpana Chawla

Working in America, India-born Kalpana Chawla was the First Woman of Indian descent to go into space in 1997.

9. Kavita Dalal

Kavita Dalal or Kavita Devi (her stage name), is yet another one of the most powerful ladies in Indian history. She was the First Indian Professional Wrestler to wrestle in WWE.

10. Dipa Karmarkar

In 2016, Dipa Karmarkar became the First Indian Woman Gymnast to qualify for an Olympic final.

11. Tessy Thomas

Tessy Thomas is yet another inspirational females of India. An Indian scientist and Director General of Aeronautical Systems now, Tessy was the First Woman Scientist in India to head the Agni-V Missile Project. 

12. Roshini Sharma

In 2014, Roshini Sharma became the First Indian Woman to take a Solo Trip from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, setting a unique record.
