Gone are the days when getting a passport was a daunting task. From endless visits to the passport office to get your form, then getting them signed by an officer to standing in long queues at the passport office. Here’s good news for you. To keep up with the modern and tech-savvy reputation of the present government, the Ministry of External Affairs has introduced a number of changes and now they have come with up another great news for all of us. The External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj has laid down new passport rules, through which you can get your passport within a week.
Below are the changes that have been introduced by Sushma Swaraj:
1. Proof of Date of Birth
Earlier the applicant born on or after 26/01/1989 had to submit a birth certificate as their date of birth proof (DOB). Now, all applicants can submit any of the following documents as their DOB proof when submitting the passport application:
- Birth Certificate issued by a Registrar of Births & Deaths or the Municipal Corporation or any other authority whosoever has been empowered under the Registration of Birth & Deaths Act, 1969.
- School leaving/transfer/Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended or a recognized educational board containing the DOB of the applicant.
- PAN card issued by the Income Tax Department of India with the DOB of the applicant.
- Aadhar card/E-Aadhar card having DOB details.
- Driving License issued by the Transport Department of the concerned State Government.
- Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the insurance policy holder.
2. Name of the Only Parent or Legal Guardian
This is probably one of the major changes that the Ministry of External Affairs has introduced where a passport can easily be issued to children with a single parent and to adopted children. It is no more mandatory to have a father’s name to be mentioned in the passport.
3. No attestation required
Earlier all the Annexes provided were supposed to be attested by the Notary/Executive Magistrate/First Class Judicial Magistrate. Now, all the Annexes that are required for the passport application would be in the form of a self-declaration on a plain paper by the applicant.
