Ayodhya Ram Mandir Will Be India’s Largest Temple
The under-construction Hindu Temple of Ram in Ayodhya is going to be the largest temple in India, simply based on its design structure. Revealing the architectural plans, designed almost 30 years ago by the Sompura family, Chandrakant Sompura revealed that the temple is expected to stand at a height of approximately 161 ft rather than the previously decided 14 ft. The temple will cover an expansive area of 28,000 sq. ft.
Know the Architect Family
The temple is being constructed by a well-revered architect family, the illustrious Sompura family. Led by chief architect Chandrakant Sompura and supported by his sons Ashish and Nikhil. Holding a legacy in temple architecture, this family is known to have built more than 100 temples worldwide.
Laying a Sacred Foundation
To contribute to the sacredness and spiritual significance of the Hindu temple, sacred soil from 2587 places from all over have been brought into Ayodhya to build the sacred foundation. Some of these places are other notable holy places like Jhansi, Bithoori, Haldighati, Yamunotri, Chittorgarh, Golden Temple, etc.
Traditional Craftsmanship for Temple Construction
The entire Ayodhya temple is built out of elements like stones, copper, white cement and wood rather than steel and iron. This is an ode to traditional style craftsmanship for this historic temple of Lord Rama. It is said that stones from the Bansi Mountains, which are known for their strength and longevity, will be used for Ram Mandir construction.
‘Sri Ram’ Bricks for Construction
To honour the sanctity of Lord Rama’s legacy, bricks bearing the inscription ‘Sri Ram’ will be used in constructing the mandir which is located on the site of Ram Janmabhoomi, the hypothesised birthplace of Lord Rama. As per legends, Ram Shilas were used to build the Ram Setu, said to be providing strength and durability to this construction.
International Spiritual Camaraderie
As a symbol of universal reverberance and international oneness for religion, soil from Thailand has been sent for the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla on January 22, 2024. This is a testament to Ram Lalla’s legacy transcending beyond geographical boundaries.
Architectural Grandeur and Heritage
Special efforts have been taken to encapsulate both the teachings of Lord Ram and India’s cultures, arts and traditions in one place. Indian heritage will be clearly reflected in the temple’s construction. Even the unique architecture of the two-storey temple will narrate the life events of Lord Ram on the ground floor with Madhubani paintings depicting ten major life events of his life. On the first floor, you will find the exquisite ‘Ram Darbaar’, made from pink sandstone from Rajasthan’s Bharatpur. The entire Ayodhya Ram Mandir will span three floors with 12 gates and five dome-shaped mandaps. The temple will have 360 pillars of Nagar style to contribute to the visual appeal of this Hindu temple.
Preserving For Eternity with Time Capsule
One of the interesting facts about Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is that a time capsule will be buried 2,000 ft. deep in the ground below the temple. This is one way to preserve the cultural heritage and safeguard the religious identity of the Ayodhya temple. The time capsule will include a copper plate with inscriptions of information about the Ram Mandir.
