It covers an area of 750 hectares, greeting over 50 million domestic and international travellers yearly! If you’re a first-time visitor, it can be extremely challenging to navigate the terminals and find what you’re looking for.
To ease your travel anxieties, let’s discuss the location, terminal details, check-in requirements, and guest facilities the Airport offers for those stuck in Mumbai for hours during a layover.
Mumbai International Airport Location & Directions
The Mumbai International Airport was named the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to honour the memory of the great Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji. The International Terminal (T2) is located in Andheri, while the Domestic Terminal (T1) is in Santacruz. Some public transport facilities you can use to get to the Airport or explore the city are:
Metro: You can now access the Mumbai Metro Line 3 directly from the Airport, which can easily get you to BKC. Visitors can quickly get to the railway station if they hop off at Marol Naka and catch the Mumbai Metro Line 1 going towards Versova.
Taxis or Rickshaws: As soon as you get out of the metro, you can find a Rickshaw to your destination easily. If you are carrying heavy luggage, we recommend booking an Uber or Ola cab directly from the app.
Bus: For affordable travel, you can hop on a BEST bus 337, which will drop you off at Andheri Railway station and vice versa. These AC Buses are available from 6 am to 11 pm.

Mumbai Airport Guide to Navigating Between Terminals 1 and 2
Is your next flight in a different terminal? Don’t panic, unless you have only 30 minutes left, you can easily travel from one terminal to the other!
The quickest way to navigate would be to hop on the Mumbai Metro Line 3 from either terminal to get to the next in less than half an hour. However, getting to the Metro Station has been difficult for visitors as there are a few obstacles, making it difficult to carry your luggage efficiently.
Another quick way to travel between terminals is to hop on the free Inter Terminal Coach Service, which will take you there within an hour, depending on the traffic. T1 and T2 are 3.6 km away from each other, so it’s better to book a private cab if you have a one or two-hour layover and need to get to the next terminal urgently.
During the renovations scheduled for 2025, Mumbai International Airport terminal navigation will transform with the introduction of a three-lane underground connection tunnel for efficient transfer! The estimated release for this connecting tunnel is around 2028.

Essential Tips for New Flyers
Every flight journey begins with the process of arriving 3 hours before your flight at the Mumbai International Airport to ensure a smooth check-in. If you’re a first-time flyer, here are some other helpful steps to add to your checklist for a smooth onboarding and departure process:
Ensure you have all Documents on Hand.
Visitors travelling abroad must carry their Passport and Visa in hand when entering the Airport. Whether you travel internationally or domestically, it is better to have a print of your ticket and your ID proof. Collect a copy of your boarding pass after your bags are checked in.
Prepare for Security Checks and Follow Baggage Guidelines
It is essential to take a look at the Baggage guidelines, including weight and size, for your particular airline before you begin packing. Avoid putting sharp and flammable items, magnetized objects, and liquids of over 100 ml in your carry-on and checked baggage.
Customs and Immigration
If you’re travelling internationally, you must go through customs and immigration checks, during which your Passport and Visa will be authenticated. You might have to answer some basic questions about your travel at this checkpoint. We recommend packing as per airline guidelines to avoid any cases of banned items being in your luggage.
If the county you’re visiting requires that you carry the local currency, ensure you get it done in advance at the Foreign Currency Exchange Services. Visitors travelling to Mumbai for the first time look for the signboard saying Baggage claim to get your luggage before you leave the Airport.
